to any of the others upthread but I'll just put it here.
This is in response to the debate about covert racism.
    This really happened:
I have a Jewish mother friend suffering from aphasia and early stage dementia. She was/is a loving, kind, sweet woman. A passionate liberal.
I went for her one day and took her shopping. As we browsed through one store I saw just the most beautiful girl. She had a short afro and with just the most beautiful dark chocolate colored skin. "Isn't she beautiful," I remarked to my friend.
She gave me a wide eyed look and didn't comment. Talking in a slow, precise way I repeated what I had said this time making it a statement.
"No," she said. "No!" I said laughing. "I should clean those glasses for you. You are always calling me beautiful and you don't think she is?" "You have different."
I felt a heat in my head and it felt as if it was growing. I want to howl, to scream. Needless to say it was a very uncomfortable drive home.

    Just another quick example.
My daughter went to London on a study abroad scholarship that she won. Had to submit essay, was interviewed three times before being chosen. I was a proud momma. I have a trainer at my gym. She is a friendly, sweet person and we always share information about our lives. She is white.
One morning I shared with her that my daughter had won this scholarship. She was happy for me and my daughter.

"That's so wonderful," she exclaimed. "Isn't it a good thing that they have programs to help minorities nowadays?"

Maya Angelou: "Without courage, we cannot practice any other virtue with consistency. We can't be kind, true, merciful, generous, or honest."
