There is simply no reason why smart people should go into teaching at the present time.

Smart people should literally simply go into whatever field they like that will pay them the most money. Eventually, school systems will raise salaries to get the good people and force out the marginal ones.

If you join a low-pay weak benefits field when you don't have to, you are just giving valuable labor away for free and sending the message that school districts can pay paltry salaries and people will flock to them "for the children".

It isn't your job to make sacrifices. If people want their children to be well educated, they can pay the going rate for good people. Otherwise just stick with your corporate job.

premise is that everyone in this society should be seeking to maximize his or her earnings, to the exclusion of every other possible value.

I used to be a teacher (T.A. and Instructor) and, while I would often bitch about my poor salary and benis compared to my peers in the private sector, my heart was never in my bitching, mainly because I loved my students and loved watching intellects that had been formerly dormant click on. Now how do you put a price tag on that intangible? (Had to stop teaching b/c funding for the positions ran out but still really miss it.)

You might wish to read Wordsworth's sonnet "The World Is Too Much With us" to broaden your perspective.

rogue administrators are attracted like flies to a $100K plus salary the same way good teachers are attracted to developing minds, hearts, souls and skill sets of young people.

These rogue administrators--mediocre at best, more often completely incompetent--are getting the good salaries, and forcing out everyone who is there despite the low salary and poor working conditions.

and it's also true what they say about administrators:

      those who can, educate.
      those who can't, administrate.
