monsters vs. "real" people in movies...IMO, there's a difference. Most kids will say there's no such thing as godzilla roaming the earth, to use an example. But, when the "monster" is a real-life human...not sure a youngster can tell the person is just acting...

When my DD was 9 or so, she saw an old gangster B&W movie. Gave her nightmares for several nights. She was so scared the criminals would come in and hurt us that she couldn't sleep. I kept telling her, they were just play acting...just like those star trek episodes, etc. Asked her what's the difference between that kind of movie and some of those "creature" films, they are both fake... She said, "oh, I know those (creature movies) aren't real."

She won't watch any crime/violent/slasher movie w/people dressed in everyday garb no matter how well done.

I just read a study using 4 and 6 year olds. They were able to distinguish something being real from being imaginary, or at least to clearly state the difference. However, then the researchers asked the kids to imagine a creature inside a wooden box they were shown. After that, the kids wanted to open the box to see what was in it, because they weren't sure if the creature might really be inside or not. Once they had imagined it, they thought maybe it really was in there.

They just aren't all the way there yet in figuring those things out.
