  •  Our envy birds (10+ / 0-)

You guys out west get some gorgeous birds for we easterners to envy. For example, I saw a Scarlet Tanager exactly once. (Yeah, yeah. . . more midwest. . .still.) You guys get the super colorful hummingbirds.

I do note, though, that Mr. White Throated sparrow is to be found by the flock full here. Along with the chipping, it's perhaps the most common (ok Eurasian Tree and American Tree, too, and the Eurasians are winning). It's good to know that one of our drabs is interesting out west.

(You guys would love the six families of Brown Thrashers within a stone's throw of me.)

    •  Where are you at? (5+ / 0-)

There's some really good birding out east... at first, having moved east from the western states, I was disappointed.  But no longer.  Depends on where you are and the season, but there's some great birding east of the Mississippi!

      •  You're right (5+ / 0-)

If I were to get in the Stanley Steamer and head out, I could net some cool stuff. I'm not that far from the Okeefenokee Swamp, so there's that, and then the ocean is about 2 hr away, and that means pelagian birds.

Mainly, though, I get birds that have great camouflage and raptors. Sharp shinned and red tailed haws, sparrow hawks (actually falcons), goat suckers, martins, blue birds, pine siskins (if they break cover), slate eyed juncos, white ibis's, cattle egrets, snowy egrets. . .  and Canada geese. This is atop the usual robin and mocking bird.
