    and surrounding areas. The natural history of that part of the continent always fascinates me.

    This picture was taken along the north shore of Lake Pend Oreille in northern Idaho, at the location of the glacial ice dam. The marker reads in part:

    Glacial ice dam filled this basin as far as you can see.
    Only the mountains with peaks rising above 4,500 ft in elevation would have been visible from the top of the glacier.
    If a time machine existed, one of my first trips would be to this place about 15,000 years ago.
