    pick a fight over nomenclature about!

    The South Vietnamese government was installed by the US's predecessors, France, with US support, against the will of the people of the country. As President Eisenhower recalled in his memoirs;

    "It was generally conceded that had an election been held, Ho Chi Minh would have been elected Premier."
    Leaving aside the various intervening coups, including the Kennedy administration-supported and -financed assassination of Ngô Đình Diệm, the South Vietnamese government by 1970 was firmly in the hands of General Nguyễn Văn Thiệu, who was planning, with US approval, the 1971 elections in which all opposing candidates were disqualified. Thiệu had been trained by the US military at Fort Leavenworth, Fort Bliss and Okinawa.

    And of course, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Once the US began withdrawing its combat troops on which the Thiệu regime rested, how long did it last?

    Me, I'm sticking with "puppet."

    •  That's too bad. (0+ / 0-)

      Your diary stands on its own without your needing to plant "hints" so the audience knows when to cheer.

      I guess I have more confidence in you than you do in yourself.
