I believe such an approach is similar to abstinence education:  avoid rather than confront.

I would like to see a re-affirmation of life. The community engaged in a makeover of the school as a show of spirit. Maybe it's the agricultural background talking, but much of real life is whitewashed by our culture. This in turn makes for traumatic experiences, due to lack of preparation or understanding, when life asserts itself. Avoidance is not healing nor does it teach resilience.

A couple of proposals are floating around, but I'm not up on the latest Newtown Patch so I can't list them by memory. But if gossip serves me, I believe the committee recommended building a new school at the same site.
