in North America?  Dude, you need to get out more.  Flaky teachers there are, but there are very smart people tpp, like Richard Hayes (read "Land of No Buddha") who rightly see humankind's destruction of the environment as (a) of paramount importance and (b) evidence of a dire need to wake up and stop being short-sighted and greedy -- i.e. to practice Buddhism 101.  (Or a roughly equivalent set of non-selfish attitudes and practices, if you're not a Buddhist.)

I think I might really like this book ("Land of No Buddha"). Thanks for the tip.

It's my favorite modern book about Buddhism, refreshingly free of muddle-headed thinking.  Hayes is very funny and sharp and knows his dharma (he's a Pali and Sanskrit scholar and long-time practitioner).  See link to intro on his webpage.  He's also got some great posts (from some years ago) on talk.religion.buddhism under variations on his name plus "Mubul" (Korean for "No Buddha").  Enjoy!  Hayes is still active on Buddha-L, an email list that is very good (I haven't followed in awhile but that's a reflection of me, not the list).
