  •  Well... (13+ / 0-)

I'm pretty sure (or, at least, as certain as anyone can be about anything Larry Flynt does) that he's doing some high-level trolling.  Take a look:

"Even though Mark Sanford has emerged as the leader against sexual hypocrisy in American politics, he is a liar. He lied to his gubernatorial staff. He lied to his wife. He lied to his children. He lied to the people of South Carolina and to the press. Despite his journey down this Appalachian Trail of deceit, I support him not for his character, but for exposing the hypocrisy of traditional values. The liar has exposed the greater lie."

As usual, Flynt is playing a meta-game.  He does that with a fair degree of regularity.  Here, Sanford fell face-first into one of Flynt's old pet peeves, which is the standard career-ending affair.  Sexual pioneer that he is, Flynt thinks that what (and who) a legislator does at night shouldn't change anyone's mind about what he or she does at work during the day - and wouldn't you know it, he's right.  Despite the fact that he usually supports Democrats, he's supporting Sanford because he doesn't like it when Democrats do the "you can't trust him because he cheated on his wife" routine any more when Democrats do it than when Republicans do it.

As for Sanford himself, I think Flynt knows perfectly well that a handshake from him is toxic to Sanford.  So he gets to make his point to the left wing, and thumb his nose at the right, as well.

    Master-level trolling, this.
