    drum sound. I've got a 1950 record from when these drum heads were still being made from animal hide, in a land of constant rain, and tensioned with rope. Yet they had most of this crisp sound because the drums had snares under the top head where the sticks strike, as well as against the then-traditional bottom head. Think of the drum from "Hogan's Heroes" theme or "The Great Escape" of the mid 1960's. Very deep rumbly sound, the sound I heard playing in school marching band, yet at least a decade earlier pipe bands were playing this tight buzzy sound.
