    since the Civil War. Lots of people did leave for one reason or another, to go West or North or anywhere, so the remaining population is mostly made of the descendants of those who were most resistant to doing so. When surveyed, they say that they can't leave family, or friends, or their home towns, or the beauties of where they live, or that they can't go and live among sinners and Socialists, or some damn reason or other that makes hash of the supposition that people want to act in their own best interests. Why, then, would you expect them to vote in their own interests?

    I have experienced the exact opposite in California, where nearly everybody except the Native Americans and the descendants of the earliest Spanish settlers is from somewhere else, and we now have Democratic supermajorities in the legislature. Not for that reason alone, of course, but it helps.
