  •  I'm jealous! (12+ / 0-)

I wish I could get a bunch of compost tilled into a big patch of ground here.  I put in a raised bed a few years ago and love having easy soil to work with there.

The rest of the yard is a challenge since the native soil is clay and there are tons of tree roots.  But at least the soil has been amended over and over for decades, so it's definitely easier to deal with than it would have been when the house was first built 90+ years ago.

    •  Sounds like you need something to lift for tilling (7+ / 0-)

They sell tillers that are actually fairly small and light, so if you look in your hardware store or online you might find something you could lift onto your raised bed.  An alternative might be what I purchased a few years ago and wind up rarely using - it's like a big four pronged fork that can be put into the ground.  Two of the prongs are long and bent, whereas the other two are just a bit bent, IIRC.  The handles are like for a wheelchair so they're contoured for gripping.  Anyway, you can just place it on the ground, twist it, and the tines dig in and dig up the soil so you can churn the earth.  It works well - I just wound up switching to trees rather than a garden so I don't till at all anymore.
