    If you find yourself in a society where everyone rubs blue mud in their navels and persecutes those who do not, then you'd do well to rub some mud in yourself while you're looking for the exit.

      on your face."  Think your own thoughts, stand on your principles, but there's a level of conventionality that every socieity needs, so just do it and move on.  Put mud on your face, and get on with more important things.  To me, it was partly about picking your battles, not automatically defying everything.  And partly about understanding that there's a non-rational aspect to being human and getting along with other humans.

      I've always remembered that image.
