I suspect underneath it all, Rush thinks he does fit this description: oppressed and disadvantaged background that colors their outlook and motivates them to cover their insecurities and forces them to hide their weaknesses...
Rush and his followers think that they are disadvantaged in this new world where a mediocre, poorly educated and angry white man no longer is in a position to command or control anything other than those in his immediate circle he can shout at or intimidate.  Being white and ignorant no longer gets you anywhere in America.  Rush's supporters - most of them - are people who are actively in the process of losing, as wages drop, people in other countries do better than they, and in a world in which a white man with a high school education (or even who barely gets a BA) no longer can count on making it into the middle class.

They are looking for someone to blame.  There will always be a place for an "entertainer" like Rush, but the difference is, this demographic is going to be more marginalized, smaller, less relevant and less economically important in the future.  Rush punches above his (considerable) weight right now; when advertisers realize that his demographic just isn't that large or valuable, his market will become more of a niche.

    •  Being white still gets you some things in the US (2+ / 0-)

For example, far less a chance of getting shot, pulled over and harassed by a cop, or not getting a job or apartment. But clearly the glory days of white privilege are winding down, and it doesn't get you what it used to. Instead of adapting to this new reality, though, these losers are wallowing in hatred and self-pity. Some of them even have to wait on black folks. Oh the indignity!
