    •  Chemistry is not my strong suit. (12+ / 0-)

My personal philosophy is to avoid herbicides, pesticides, and artificial fertilizers wherever possible.

When it comes to invasive plants, the damage done by leaving them alone is often greater than any damage that might be done by herbicides. Had I attempted to pull up that one patch of English ivy, it would likely have taken hundreds of hours. And every tiny piece of root that broke off would send up a new shoot.

Even The Nature Conservancy has resorted to using herbicides against invasive plants. They also use natural means such as controlled fire, and having volunteers pull up the plants one by one.

And it's important do distinguish between herbicides and pesticides. Herbicides interfere with the normal growth patterns of plants. Pesticides are toxins that tend to kill and injure many more species than the intended target.
