  •  My gut says with proper gun training (5+ / 0-)

the average citizen comes away understanding what little a gun does for them and leads them to understand how TO be safe.

    •  I dunno. I'm skeptical that the numbers bear that (2+ / 0-)

out. There are an awful lot of gun owners out there trained in safety, and there are an awful lot that believe in guns for self-protection. There's gotta be some overlap. I think what folks need to keep in mind that gun safety classes are taught by people, per self-definition, that have a vested interest in gun possession. Otherwise they would be teaching all-purpose safety classes.

    •  That would be the proper training, which almost (4+ / 0-)

no one is receiving at this "gun fanatic and play time 'ranges'" where training for Concealed Carry is done.

A whole lot of the "Training" has to do with word-of-mouth tales of how incompetent the police are and how you will be so well prepared for whatever happens after blasting a few dozen paper targets on a 100% controlled environment range.  Such a joke....

      •  "training"? what is this "training" of which you (6+ / 0-)

Here in Floriduh, getting a CCW requires that you fire ONE SHOT from a gun. Any gun--not necessarily yours. And it doesn't even have to be in the general direction of a target.

After that, you can go hunt some suspicious-looking black kids carrying Skittles as often as you like.

        •  Well, in some states, you have to go to a class (2+ / 0-)

but the classes don't consist of much.

          •  It is time to step up and demand gun safety class (0+ / 0-)

in all American communities for gun owners, those considering, and those who have never owned or fired a gun.  We must get together and start respecting and talking with each other, forget about Wash. DC, untl there is legistlative vote and get in to support it, gun safety intelligence is for all regardless of what the NRA says about not cooperating with this process.  Americans want to own guns, they just don't trust enough in the frailty of human intention to keep them safe.  But I am an American who does not own or ever shot a gun.  I and you need gun saftey education that is univerally accessible in the best traditions of democracy.

            •  That doesn't help at all (0+ / 0-)

The proper response is get rid of the damned guns. Anything else is just pissing into the wind.

              •  Get rid of the damn guns? (0+ / 0-)

We have to get rid of the 2d Amendment to the Constitution.  We could do that of course, only 5 million people with the NRA as members. Then we banish them in all civil society with few exceptions or say that's it plowshare time for your toys boys.  Sounds like the other side likes the fear of the of the END of Days as a selling point for guns.  We also need a narrative to make our case to the voters, then they will decide.  How does this sound, "Abolish all guns in our country and make the plowshare your goal. End this useless slaughter of human life."
