  •  Perception, perception. In the mid '70S I was (7+ / 0-)

visiting businesses in north Georgia (almost 100% white) after being just recently transferred to Atlanta, a city I was very familiar with.  It was my first day in my new territory. Repeatedly after introducing my white self, I heard comments i.e. "You live in Atlanta? I guess you are about to move out of there after what is happening!"

I replied mildly, "No, I just moved back. And am glad to be there."

But by the afternoon I was beginning to think maybe something must be happening--a race riot perhaps?  At that time there were two Atlanta dailies, so I purchased the afternoon newspaper and guess what?  Nothing was happening.

Fiscal conservative: a Republican ready to spend $5 to save a dime--especially if that dime is helping a non-donor.

I grew up in Marietta, and keep a cabin in Blue Ridge, and have in-laws from Rome. And boy do I feel your pain on that one. I still can't get over that driving to Atlanta meant taking the Larry McDonald Memorial Highway across the Lester and Virginia Maddox Memorial Bridge.
