  •  Good point. Never ever put a good knife (4+ / 0-)

in the dishwasher. That's the fastest way to run the handle on a good knife. The metal blade and the handle expand at different rates and this will quickly cause it to fail.

I have some inexpensive paring knifes that I put in the dishwasher without a problem, but if you're paying $120-150 or more for a knife, I don't think that's a good idea.

Apart from the fact that the handle can be damaged, you or someone in your family can injure themselves when removing the contents of the dishwasher. Leaving a long bladed knife in the dishwasher is a little like leaving a gun loaded where someone might pick it up thinking it's unloaded.

A sharp knife can also damage the plastic coatings on the dishwasher trays and that can lead to rusting.

If you're talking about stainless steel knifes, then you might as well put them in the dishwasher because there's not much to lose. But, if you're dealing with quality knifes, I'd recommend that you treat them with respect and clean them by hand in order to avoid a Calamity. :-)

he was (politely! He's a Finn!) appalled when I put the good knife in the dishwater in the SINK just long enough to wash it! I shudder to even think of his horror at putting it in a dishwasher.
