    but I think much of what I've read on Carver has a rather shallow tone - so many of them are books written for children and teens.

    You may want to check journal articles instead of books.

      as puppies. Describes Carver playing with his student assistants calling the students puppies. Mind you these are college students.  The youngest would have been perhaps 17, older ones in their 20's.

      There are other things. I didn't write them down as I went along, wasn't looking for or expecting that. The book was first published in 1943, a different world ago in some ways.

      My county library system has several biographies by different authors. Maybe I will just get them all, a couple at a time, and make notes of which are the best.
