  •  Jim DeMint never held the seat we're discussing (0+ / 0-)

Tim Scott replaced him in the Senate. DeMint is from Greenville, which is the 4th District and that's the congressional seat DeMint held.  I recognize the sterotype that whites in SC vote Republican and African-Americans vote Democratic.  Statistics bear that out as a general rule. There are exceptions, and this district in SC could be one of them in the right circumstances (which we may have right now). So, I still don't get the 75% whites voting comment. I think MadGeorgiaDem has it - the kneejerk reaction to vote with the (R), regardless of merit, is the problem.

Because whites vote in large numbers for the Republican.

      Keep the TVA public.

I just had an interesting conversation with a SC African-American county party chair at the Joe Biden dinner this weekend.  She was decrying the perception in SC that the Dems were the party of minorities and did nothing for white voters. We spent a part of the evening discussing how we might better get the message across as to which party is really looking out for the low income and middle class, be they black or white or hispanic. So, I concede your comment as being the way things are.  I think we can change it if we keep trying so I'm still hoping for Elizabeth.  (BTW, Democrat Linda Ketner came within 2 points of taking this seat in 2008, with Obama on the ticket, and she wasn't nearly as well-funded as Elizabeth is).
