  •  joan is so much tougher than everyone else- (11+ / 0-)

tougher than the men, anyway. I think the idea that don can't handle talking to or sitting near the guy, compared to everything joan had to do to and take from the guy, is what's upsetting.

plus joan did all that work to take the firm public, only then to find out don's temper tantrum made that impossible.

joan works like a dog. she should have been made a partner much earlier, and w/out having to sleep w/ anybody.

    •  Jaguar acct was never going to last (10+ / 0-)

That jerk of a car salesman constantly had such outrageous demands, the whole ad program would have ended up a bust.  It would have hurt  SCDP's good reputation if they had stuck it out, caved to some of his demands and ended up with an ad program that looked shitty.  In all the years I worked in account management, I never saw a customer quite as bad as that guy.  Close, but not quite.

Joan needs to toughen up a little more.  If you make the mistake of sleeping with a customer (and a woman exec never should) don't get emotionally attached to sacrifice you made to get the account.  Don't let it be personal, period. In fact, forget you ever did such a dumb thing.  If the account goes away, its no big deal.

I watched this epi with my son and went over the business rules as they came up. If you really value your career:

Never have sex with customers or other people at work.  Cultivate a social life outside of the workplace and engage in relationships with other people you meet.  There are many, many people in the world you can fall in love with outside of work.

Never go to a bordello, period. (As a woman, this was never an issue, haha) Guys, if you must pay for sex, find a way to do it discreetly and rarely.

Never tell off your customer in front of others, no matter how bad they are. In fact, never tell them off, period.  Dump them later by phone, email or letter in a professional manner.  I was kind of shocked the writers had Don do that, it didn't seem to be his style.

      •  Rec'd for a thoughtful tome. (7+ / 0-)

But the show is about the way it was back in the day.  So all those open sores are there for us to endure, and shake our heads at.

The likely audience of Mad Men is made of folks who've moved on from women objectification,  spouse abuse, mysogynism, and sexism.

Really glad that DK is examining the show!  We all need a break from the current political clime.

        •  My view is from the late 1970's (3+ / 0-)

About 10 years later when more women were going into jobs like account manager.  So, it reflects that time period, when women had to be so careful not to screw up because everyone expected you to do things the way Joanie did.  We were trying to break that mold.  No cleavage, no flirting, no screwing around at the office.

Fun times, haha!  My boss had to take my customers to the bordello, instead of me.

    •  Yeah, but nobody told Don (6+ / 0-)

(which strains credulity, btw). How is Don at fault when he wasn't in on the play? And it's not a temper tantrum when some idiot wants to bring a kid from the sales office to dictate what the agency does. That's a legit dealbreaker.

I never liked you and I always will.
