...but I did have a gun when I was five.  My dad did a pretty thorough job of instilling the "concept of death or responsibility or the idea of causation" in me, as well as filing the trigger spring to make the pull one that I could handle accurately.  He was a gunsmith.  His readiness for parenthood is always debatable, but as he doesn't read here, it won't do any good.  Limited though his abilities may have been, I would say they far exceed the qualifications of your average American today...hence my vote.  "There's always a couple hundred million idiots that ruin it for everybody..."  Okay, that's kidding... it really is just not a very good idea today, and probably never was.

I'm just against giving them to five year olds. Hell, I was 12 when I learned to shoot: with an adult rifle, supervised by adults, and no gun was marketed to my small frame.

"Billy, how many times have I told you not to run with those scissors, you could poke your eye out, and stop pointing that gun at your sister!"

"Mom, I need the scissors to make some targets. Can I use these instead?"

"No, silly you can't use Barbie and Ken for target practice...and stop pointing that gun at your sister!"

"Mom, Billy said he was going to blow my brains out."

"He didn't really mean that, Sweetie. Why don't you get a pair of scissors and help your brother cut out some targets. Don't run with those scissors, you could poke your eye out! ....kids."

And they scream... The worst things in life come free to us... Cause we're just under the upper hand... And go mad for a couple grams.

When I learned to shoot. Didn't get to have my own gun - and had to chant the safety rules every time I went out on the range before I got issued my rifle and ammo. Had to recite them to lay my hands on the air rifle for can plinking, too, with Pops always right there to tell me what was what, too.

Got a cut-down .243 when I was 12, and legal to hunt - it was mine, but I only got to handle it when we went out to practice at the range or hunt, and dad was never more than five yards away when I had it in my hands.

The kid has something to do with it, too. Some kids you can put a rifle in their hands at 8-10-12, supervised, and expect it to come out ok. My sister and I got taught to shoot as kids - but neither one of us, or our dad, would even consider putting a firearm in my nephew's hands. It'd be a recipie for death. The enabler, though, to problem is when parents eyes are too clouded by closeness and ideology to see the kids' real readiness.

      I will keep that one.

five year old that shoots his two year old sibling with his .22 rifle marketed to kids.
