    the number of people actually killed by, say, diseases or gun violence rapidly outweighs terrorism.  

    You started to come up with a good counter argument but then you got tired half way through.

      Just because one thing is worse than another, doesn't mean it's not a legitimate area of concern.  Cancer outweighs AIDS by a long shot but would anyone seriously suggest that we shouldn't be concerned about AIDS?

        but our level of concern should match the actual, quantifiable danger.

        If you're not someone that's sexually promiscuous, a drug user, or someone that was unlucky to get a blood transfusion before they screened for AIDS, then cancer is a greater danger to you than AIDS.  Not that you still can't get AIDS, it's just the chance of it is much lower.  It would make sense to eat nutritious food to fight cancer, but not wake up at night calling an AIDS hotline for a take home test :P
