    The education system is deplorable. My mother, a public school teacher, saw how terrible the public schools are as whole and my parents saw no choice but to spend an arm and a leg to send my sister and I to Catholic school. Which, thankfully, didn't serve up fundie creationism in science class but DID lecture us that birth control would make us likely to become diseased and infertile.

    The religiosity and fundamentalism, however, is prevalent everywhere. For example, traffic delays were caused by the long lines of cars extending from the Chick-fil-A's on Huckabee's appointed "defend marriage" day. And it's astonishing how many of my medical school classmates here believe in Biblical creationism, and how many of them cannot wrap their heads around the concept of bodily autonomy for women.
    Did you ever escape, FogCityJohn?  I hope to get a residency in a blue state so I don't have to raise a family in this kind of atmosphere.
