  •  Did Ferdinand and Isabella (8+ / 0-)

have the support of the people to fund exploration into the New World?  Many of their subjects still believed the world was flat and Columbus would simply sail off the edge - what a waste of Iberian gold!

-- I suspect your co-worker may be equally suspicious of any government supported scientific research.  Or maybe science in general.

wish I would have thought of it.

Without the investment of Ferdinand and Isabella,

      •  Of course - but would the people have supported (0+ / 0-)

or opposed an exploration into the unknown?  Does a general populace have to favor exploration/science for it to be worthy of government support?

was that the earth was supposed to be 6000 miles less in diameter, so they were supposed to end up in India at the end of the trip. Hence Indians. A new trade route to the Indies without having to sail around Africa was expectation. No problem with support.

At least half the future I've been expecting hasn't gotten here yet. Sigh.... (Yes, there's gender bias in my name; no, I wasn't thinking about it when I signed up. My apologies.)
