    In September of 2004 I was in Germany at a scientific conference (I'm a mathematician) and was having lunch with a colleague, and friend, who's Dutch.  We started talking about the upcoming US Presidential election, when suddenly he startled me by characterizing the Democratic Party as "right wing".  I then asked him what the Republican Party was, and he said "far right wing.  You have no centrist or left-wing parties in the US".   And, compared with western Europe that's right.  It really opened my eyes.

      left of even the Democratic Party, on average. No one represents the working class or progressive, really. The downside to a two-party system that's bought and paid for on both sides by the rich and powerful. The Koch brothers and Pete Peterson are just not that far apart in their orientation and goals...
