Personally I think the universe was created in three weeks by a giant box of Ritz crackers.

    •  But who made the crackers? (2+ / 0-)

and Who ground the flour to make the batter that made the crackers?

It's super easy to fix this whole thing. Just start threatening to teach Wicca in Creationists class, because of equal time and all that, and the Christianists will have a cow and shut up.

"For the fool sayeth unto heaven, 'where so cometh these crackers?'  But sayeth rather, 'where beith thy divine Cheez Whiz that I may spreadeth upon them?'"

of alternative religions in class, namely some occult based philosophy, and this will go away. Also, hilarity will ensue.

            •  As funny as that is, it won't work as well. (4+ / 0-)

They know it's tongue and cheek. Pick a religion that really freaks them out, which Wicca--heck throw some Islam in there too, especially Sufism  and the Fundies on the staff and in the administration will pop out random cows and kittens instantly all over the school.

Not only will this identify the roots of the problem in any given school, but it will force them to admit that ID is simply an indoctrination tool for Christian Fundamentalism, because they will refuse--absolutely refuse to be a part of any class that teaches anyone about all those other false religions.

Then you have them over a barrel.

The truth is I don't have a dog in this fight directly, not being a parent - I just really hate willful stupidity.

We can do very little to counteract it if that is the framework used. How likely would you be to change if someone called you "willfully stupid" for being a Democrat?

I know people with Stanford degrees who believe in creationism. Understanding the fearfulness that leads them to need a literal interpretation of the bible makes me feel sorry for them, not contemptuous. Having strategies like demanding representation for Wicca or, for that matter, Episcopalian, interpretations is much more likely to be effective in keeping schools healthy. Correcting the underlying problem of literal interpretation is a much longer haul.

Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary? . . . and respect the dignity of every human being.

When I have dealt with individuals like this, they hound others who are in other religions. They cause troubles for them at school and at work, and do so "with the very best of intentions."

After all, whats a little impoverishment or social ridicule when your immortal soul is at stake.

And then others go along because it's an easy system to manipulate to get what they want socially and professionally.

I used to have more sympathy for people like this, but I suppose after dealing with effed up attitudes, and yes--IGNORANCE--because as stated, many do not know their own religious history and seem gleefully unaware of their own rules, while parading about pretending like they know how everyone else should live.

                    It's annoying in small doses.
                    Crazy making in moderate doses.
Life Destroying when they create a system of intolerance.

other than adding a day to the 7 day narrative, its creationism mostly comes from Genesis.

                  Paganism
                  Mormonism,
                  Hinduism

                  even Judaism.

News stories abound going back years, showing this intolerance for what it is, in school after school all over the country. It's simply another tentacle of Dominionism at it's core.

If they can teach our children out from underneath us, problem solved!

It's ironic how when evolutionary science is rejected too, then it's easier also to reject the notion that homosexuals are a natural variation, as opposed to a psychological aberration.

Offer to teach the "controversy" of differing interpretations of the Bible.  Start with five or six Jewish ones.
