had children who nursed the sick and others who fought in World War II- some with family members who didn't emigrate that fought on the other side.
One served in the Army at Omaha Beach on D-Day.

They worked in mills, brewed beer- my great-grandfather brewed beer and distilled alcoholic beverages in Rochester, NY, including making root beer for neighborhood kids. When he died, the mayor and police chief attended his service and mourners lined up down the block because the church was too full to fit them in.

These immigrants become citizens. They work hard and add to our communities and way of life. They bring knowledge and rituals from their birth societies to add color, complexity and value to the mosaic that is American life. No, not a melting pot. We are not a homogenized nation, no matter how some might want that. We are a mosaic of individuals and individual cultures making up a beautiful bigger picture- America.

God, how I love this country and its myriad peoples!

The more the merrier. I'm for leaving the door open and greeting newcomers with, "Welcome in. Whatcha got?"

Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal. - Martin Luther King, Jr.
