  •  As a kid we mostly grew up in apartments (8+ / 0-)

except when I was really young, and living in apartments I was taught not to look inside people's windows as I walked by, in order to give people privacy. I was also taught to "ignore" other people's conversations that I overheard, not get too friendly with people in the laundry room, etc. Let's just say my mom had plenty of reasons for not wanting the neighbors to know too much about our business, something I didn't understand until I was older. I grew up thinking neighbors were to be avoided as much as possible.

There was a "golden age" in our neighborhood here about 10 years ago where everyone on our dead end road was friendly and on any summer afternoon or evening tended to gather on each other's decks to hang out. Lots of barbecues and shared gardening chores, kids and dogs running around everywhere--  I grew to like it! Like all golden ages it didn't last, but it was sweet while it lasted.

Oh, I used to be disgusted
Now I try to be amused
