  •  Hmmm... (6+ / 0-)

    Both are difficult.

I have had some fantastic neighbors.  I have also had some horrific ones.

One particular young lady lived across the patio from me for a few years, and we got close enough that we discussed making it official.

Another lived next door and had a daughter who (at 2-4 years old) was just cute as a button, and very smart.  I still stay in touch with them.  We used to sit on the patio and chat and play with the kid.  She moved back with her (at the time estranged) husband and had another kid and are very happy.

But there were the others.  The guy who spray painted the inside of his apartment black and kicked holes in the walls, and chased people with a knife.  The cops finally took him away.  The guys who used to party until 3 AM with loud music.  The cops took them away.  The guy who knocked over a lantern and set the building on fire.  Some tenants put that out before the FD showed up (thank goodness for navy firefighting school!).

Neighbors are (generally) just ... people.  good, bad, indifferent.

I am not religious, and did NOT say I enjoyed sects.

However, I will say that it appears to be getting worse, rather than getting better---as far as having peaceful neighbors.
      •  Sorry to hear that. (4+ / 0-)

When we had the Big Blackout last year (San Diego), we all (almost everyone in my neighborhood) had lawn/porch parties, spontaneously.  Those who didn't have candles or other non-electric lights got help from those who did, and in my apartment complex we all hung out on the patio and got to know each other.  Very nice.

The 3 of us who have lived there the longest told stories about the building and neighbors.

What I found interesting was that the houses with generators stayed locked up and remained asocial.
