    is threatening the 2nd amendment.  The right to own is not imperiled by background checks or even registration (want that gun back if somebody steals it? register it.)  And the military at the outbreak of the Civil War was faced with the state-run militias (the well-regulated militia part of the 2nd amendment), not a bunch of conspiracy-theory American terrorists.  They were back by the state/State.  Whether or not the officers later resigned their commissions and changed sides, I promise you if fired upon, they'd fire back first.  If a state decides to secede because of the 2nd amendment, your argument will be valid.  As long as the states are not involved and the fight is between the military and state-less terrorists, the military will stay with the Union.
