if you have the gumption and the backing.
Then when that amendment fails spectacularly, undo it. See Prohibition for an example.
Don't throw out an administrative go-around and then spend 40 or 50 years locking people up over it. Make the law consistent with the Constitution, or figure out the Constitution trumps your interpretation of it. See Roe V. Wade and The War on Drugs as examples.

      is not "bullshit", right?

      You have to start somewhere.

since about the day after Newtown, IIRC.

You want to ban guns? Amend the Constitution so you can.
Otherwise ... Hi, Prometheus, how's tricks today?

I was just responding to the comment above, nothing more, nothing less.

As for amending the constitution in this case, particularly as it pertains to the second amendment, reasonable arguments can be made and have been made as far as the necessity to amend the Constitution or not in order to have reasonable gun laws. This issue has already been brought to the highest courts and the courts have ruled that reasonable limits can be imposed, no need for a Constitutional amendment. That is simply a fact.

This argument is not about the Constitution, some just want to deflect and distract. This argument is about reasonable gun laws.
