My wife changed jobs in the new year and we were surprised to find that we wouldn't be covered until she had been employed 90 days. It was the first time we had been uninsured since we were married (24 years next week). We found that we could activate the COBRA from the previous employer up to 6 month retroactively if necessary, plus applicable deductibles and co-pays. We ended up paying for an office visit and labs out of pocket, which added up to just under $280 compared to the minimum $3600 we would have paid to have COBRA in place for the 90 days.

I'm fairly certain most people don't have the "backstop" my family does (my wife's brother and his wife are DINKs with a six figure household income starting with "3") so I'm certain we weren't taking nearly the risk that many households with insurance gaps do, but it was plenty uncomfortable for me.
