Coming next, renaming the state to Stupid Carolina.

insult & personal attack and ergo HR worthy.

Factually, how stupid can they be, given that they were able to get a major political party to hold a convention down there.

SC is a stupid state, because it elects stupid people. If you really believe in what you just wrote, you have no choice but to HR both comments.

Ok, my imaginary lawyers just informed me that, for the benefit of the ironically and pedantically challenged, I have to spell out that I don't believe that ALL residents of the Palmetto State are stupid, but merely most.

based on THIS site's rules--it was an unmerited HR, period.

Who did I "personally" insult and attack? Insulting several million people is the textbook definition of IM-personal. The site has been at pains to explain that ONLY the vilest of comments are worthy of HRs. Are you actually claiming that this was, even "arguably"? Can you please stop digging?

comment, but I don't think that the HR that was given can be legitimately decried since the comment did, in fact, insult a grioup of people of which the person issuing the HR may have been a member.

Your theory would justify ethnic jokes, blonde jokes, jokes about any class of persons (visually handicapped, etc.). That doesn't fly. you can no more insult a specified class of persons than you can a specified individual unless you can be reasonably certain that no member of class would be here to take offence.

If you think "stupid" is a grievous insult and personal attack, then you are much too thin-skinned to be participating on DKos or pretty much any other interactive place on the internet.

"They'll like us when we're nice" nonsense. We ARE nice, in the only way that really matters, namely the policies that we promote, as opposed to that phony "niceness" that some suthnah's like to brag about as they stick it to minorities and the poor. No, they'll "like" us when we crush them, not when we're "nice" to them. Well, technically not "like", but I could give a rat's ass what someone who votes for a piece of shit like Sanford thinks of me. If they hate me, I take it as a sign that I'm doing something right and a badge of honor.

Factually false. Intellectual dishonesty isn't classy, nor is HR abuse.

as an SC resident to balance a lousy HR.

Empirical evidence proves the state of South Carolina is, on average, stupider than other states.

And the majority of voters in South Carolina really take the "representative" thing to heart.

when dealing with the sorts of people who vote for the Sanfords and DeMints of the world. Classiness without substance or for appearances only is utterly meaningless. If anything it has negative meaning. Guy cheats on his wife, skips out on his job and lies to his constituents in a way that insults even their intelligence, and I'm supposed to respect the assturds who vote for him?

We've tried that "respect gun culture, born again culture, NASCAR culture, trailer park culture, what-not culture" and didn't get much for it beyond people who hate us even more than when we tried to meet them half way.

          Screw that.

Stop implicitely defending your worst elements, or excusing their racism and stupidity, just because they're your neighbors, friends and kin, or you have this weird misplaced sense of false civility. You're the enablers who make it possible for them to get away with their shit and drag the state and country down with them. What is it with you people, choosing tribalism over justice?

South Carolina is the stupid state. Always has been, still is, hopefully won't always be. But to get there, you need to get past this denial. It's frankly embarrassing. Calhoun, Thurmond, Helms, Haley, Graham, Sanford. You're actually defending people who voted for such asswipes? Seriously?

I hid the comment based on an older, outdated, understanding of an HR -- that the comment should not be seen as it would put dKos in a bad light. Apparently the new standard is more strict.

But still...imagine an undecided voter in South Carolina who is led to this comment by Google. Our chances of winning her vote are much less after we've called her "stupid".

Once you insult somebody, they won't listen to anything else you say. Insults make it more difficult for us to win elections.

Would you vote for somebody who thinks you're stupid?

The comment was not HR'able, but the attitude behind it hurts us badly.

But I have to disagree with your logic. Unless and until I'm shown empirical evidence that supports it--and I have not--I'm going to have to reject it.

For one thing I seriously doubt that most swing voters have ever heard of DKos let alone are influenced by it one way or another. And for another, the suggestion that we should "watch what we say" lest it reflect poorly on us strikes me as Orwellian. This is a "safe" place for centrists and lefties to discuss politics, and short of truly vile and offensive statements, everything goes here, regardless of its imagined impact beyond this site.

But seriously, there's no evidence that I know of to support the idea that anyone here insulting the sorts of people who would even consider voting for the likes of Sanford has ever lost an election for a Dem. If you can show me such evidence, then I will reconsider my stance.
