  •  Okay, so all of the gloom and doom aside... (16+ / 0-)

Speaking as a Floridian, I know what it's like to have an incredibly unpopular asshat (Scott) defeat an amazing woman viewed popular by a majority of the electorate (Sink) simply because she was a Democrat. And yeah, it sucks.

But this isn't a prognostication of the 2014 midterm elections any more than Mark Critz's win in his 2010 special election was an omen of the 2010 midterms, or any more than Stephanie Herseth Sandlin's and Ben Chandler's victories in their 2004 special elections were omens of the 2004 elections.

When it comes to going up against asshat candidates in far-right places, we can't win them all. We managed to re-elect Senator McCaskill in Missouri and elect Senator Donnelly in Indiana, and we never got Congressman Eric Stewart in Tennessee. And yes, there are obviously differences among the races, but my overall point stands.

I remain optimistic about 2014, even with regard to South Carolina. I think that Elizabeth Colbert Busch might come away from this election from some lessons learned, and if she chooses to run again in 2014, she'll be better off. That, and she has the benefit of sharing the ballot with Vincent Sheheen, about whose campaign I am optimistic.

Yes, this is sucky, but it is what it is. Silver lining: Boehner has to deal with another difficult member of his caucus, and this certainly doesn't help the brand of the Republican Party.

    Cheers!
