  •  Worked at a shoe factory (8+ / 0-)

It wasn't the scut jobs where you never mad piece rate, lack of air conditioning, the 20 minute lunch break, or even the malodorous cafeteria, it was the supervisors who followed you into the bathroom during the afternoon break to make sure you weren't smoking or socialising.
One day the sun was shining, the mountain laurel was in bloom, and three of us took off for a picnic and never came back. I did work the rest of the summer, but it was as a counsellor at a Girl Scout camp.
When I think of manufacturing that has been offshored, I know some good union jobs have left, but there were also a lot of pissant non-union factories where people were rode hard so the owner could own a Jaguar V-12. That misery has been offshored out of sight as well. Something to remember when you put on your shoes.

    •  Best day I ever had as a door-to-door salesman (0+ / 0-)

was the day I drove to Muir Woods and spent the afternoon wandering amongst the redwoods.  It was a Multi-Level-Marketing gig where the supervisors were people trying to put together a team of salesmen who would be giving them a cut of their sales while they were trying to put together their own team to give them a cut, etc.

The supervisor took a couple of us "underperforming" people out and he chose the very same businesses to walk into that we had, and was similarly unable to sell anything.  I think I was there about three days.
