  •  A bit of shameful namedropping (13+ / 0-)

Decades ago I wrote to Frank Herbert's publisher to ask permission to use quotes from Dune in a computer application I was developing.

He wrote back, personally as far as I can tell. I haven't validated the signature to find out if it was a secretary.

I framed the letter and it has a special place on the special place I reserve for special things.

He denied my request, very politely.

    •  Well you started it ... (0+ / 0-)

I attended a lecture by Frank Herbert circa 1970; it was an eye opener.  He was very conscious of word choice (duh) and how through juxtaposition of the right set of words, those with the right connotations as well as denotations, a rich world of imagination could be set in motion by the reader.

I think (or perhaps have invented - it was over 40 years ago) he described this as selecting the right words from a "matrix of meaning" composed of a much larger number of words and their associations that fully describe the Dune world.

It's a slim volume.  He created a world.
