    They're simply non-profit organizations.  These corporations can choose to designate themselves as charities, but they have to meet further requirements to do so.

    Peterson's group is not a charitable organization, they don't provide any kind of financial assistance to the public.

      There are operating and non-operating (grant-making foundations), but all 501(c)3 foundations can call themselves charities (which is not even an official IRS designation), and all offer the exact same tax-deductibility for contributions.
