  •  I don't remember that they actually ate (5+ / 0-)

    very much.
But I would certainly throw cover sheets over the stuff that you want. My memories were just of insatiable leaf hunger, and a whole TON of ugly crunchy critters with nothing to do and nowhere to go.
BTW- BiPWM, the only time I experienced a 17 year hatch, I was in Gambier. Gross. You were probably in MV then? '83 or 84?

    •  Aaargh! Time to tent the tomatoes! (0+ / 0-)

Lived out west for the last three major hatches, deep down south for the ones before that.  Remember "June bugs", but nothing like what's forecast for this.  All I recall is the barrels full of ladybugs atop Kitt Peak in the early 1980s, so the swarming happens even in the deep desert (like locusts, I guess).  At least the lady bugs were harmless, but those orange "snow" drifts against all the buildings were icky nevertheless.

Thanks for the wisdom.  I'll try to get prepared.  The heat and drought took most of my veggies last summer.  Don't know if I can deal with another existential blow again!
