  •  Running for Washington Senate Seat (3+ / 0-)

I'm seriously considering running to replace Sen. Patty Murray in the next election for Senate here in Washington. I know she has a following, but I think she's now vulnerable because she hasn't stood up for us in the budget negotiations. Here's (part of) her latest missive to me:

Thank you for contacting me about the automatic cuts from sequestration. I appreciate hearing from you regarding this important issue.

As you may know, sequestration was included in the bipartisan Budget Control Act (BCA) of 2011 that raised the debt ceiling and cut spending. Sequestration was never meant to be implemented...

...I was proud that, as Chairman of the Budget Committee, I worked to write and pass a budget that replaced sequestration with an equal mix of responsible spending cuts and new revenue that comes from closing loopholes and ending wasteful deductions that benefit the wealthiest Americans and biggest corporations.

What are "responsible spending cuts"? What cuts are we talking about? No spending cuts are responsible. What she's talking about is offloading problems on the taxpayers.

If you wanted to cut spending what you'd do is solve the problems. But I haven't seen a single problem solved. Did they solve the healthcare crisis? No. Have they achieved peace? No. Did they end poverty? Have they come up with a way for every qualified young person to afford college? How are we doing on record unemployment levels?

This is not the best we can do. We need someone there that thinks through the problems and what it takes to make them go away. We need a progressive to represent us. A progressive would be someone who wants to make progress.

You can't do that by compromising with the Republicans. You have to defeat them. To do that, we need someone that will go on the offensive. I'm not seeing that in Patty Murray, or in the practically invisible Maria Cantwell.

I would hate to run for her seat. It would take a 24-hour-a-day commitment and a lot of money I don't have.

But, what am I do to? This is just unacceptable. She's talking about cutting! Doesn't she know the first thing about money? You cut your way to having nothing. If you want to get somewhere you have to bring in the dollars. You have to generate revenue.

Patty, you're talking like a Republican. Perhaps it's time to step down.
