  •  I received my 1A status as soon as I turned 18 (6+ / 0-)

Like you, I had a very low number, and was told I would be given two weeks notice when they were going to ship me out.

That haunted me for a number of years because they kept me at 1A status in case they decided to start another war and reinstated the draft.

Thankfully, anyone with a 1A status became permanently ineligible for the draft after four years, and I was finally free. First in line for four years.

I hope that, during my lifetime, there will be a liberal president.

    •  Never made it to 1A (5+ / 0-)

Dropped into the SS office in Dallas, TX, about a week before my 18th birthday, announced I wanted to sign up for the draft.  She said "You do?"'  Well, I don't want to go to jail.

I'm not sure when the lottery was for 1954 births, but for the first time since it started, my number was under 180.  Lucky me, they stopped drafting in the second half of 72.  They didn't fund the draft in '73 so no one got drafted...
