  •  So, those who aren't of hearty German stock? (13+ / 0-)

Wow.  There is no delusional convert like a new one, is there?  Our country was founded by others, Rand's family liked it so they migrated into it in pursuit of a better life.

You know, kind of like the "immigrants" do these days?

Why I'll bet when Rand's great-grandfather came here he didn't "talk like us", maybe didn't "dress like us" or even "look like us".  And less than thirty years later our nation was at war with the country of his birth.  Maybe we should have deported him or put him in Internment Camps?

Rand really isn't very bright, is he?

    •  I grew up enjoying German contributions (8+ / 0-)

to the American potpourri - since many of my mom's family members were in PA - the Pennsylvania German cultural contributions diffused into other groups cultures - like eatingscrapplefor breakfast.

But instead of rejecting the additions to the cultural stew - some of us see new additions as enrichments.

      The bigots don't.

      Their loss.

    •  "We" weren't far from it... (7+ / 0-)

Many immigrants lived in homogeneous communities where their native language was still widely spoken, and had local newspapers in that language, (not unlike many Hispanic, Hmong, and Somali communities now.) When we got into "The Great War," anyone speaking German became "suspect." That spread to other immigrant communities as well.
The little Iowa town where my father was born in 1918 was named after an English city (Hull) but had been absorbed into a wave of Dutch immigration, and was probably 95% Dutch. You could go all week without speaking English, from church to the store, and even to the Post Office. There was a wave of pro-American "patriotism" during the War which discouraged the general speaking of Dutch within the community. It even lead to a separation within the church. The Dutch Reformed Church used the Dutch language for worship, and many of the ministers were still trained in the Netherlands. The main church was called the First Reformed Church. A new congregation broke off from them called the American Reformed Church, using English for worship.

Scary to think that someone like Rand could be elected to congress, isn't it?

In the time it took Adam Lanza to reload, eleven children escaped. What if...

    •  I don't know if Rand is bright (7+ / 0-)

but I do know his so-called "heart" is like a little piece of shrunken charcoal. And his perception of other people is chilling.

      Jon Husted is a dick.
