  •  What he's saying, I believe, is that, (6+ / 0-)

in our zeal to be tolerant and egalitarian, we apply a "false" fair and balanced assessment of Islam. His basic premise is that it is NOT the same, it is fundamentally flawed with a singularly vicious patriarchal, misogynistic culture that far exceeds any other religion.

..by the context of what was presented in Maher's move, Religulous.

In that movie, Maher portrayed Christianity as equally vile & absurd as Islam.

If Maher suddenly thinks Islam is more vile & absurd than Christianity, then Maher owes a big apology to his movie audience for scamming them.

To any Republican reading this, I request you write a diary about why Republicans are such assholes. I promise to tip & recommend such a diary.

..in the Americas, American slavery justified by Blacks being "the cursed sons of Ham." Invading Iraq because "our God is bigger." Apartheid in Gaza and gross mistreatment of Palestinian people. Sure Islam is the worst.

Give me a break. Whenever you invade, occupy and humiliate a people, you wipe out their moderates, and pave the way for their crazy motherfuckers rise to power. It's why the fascist anti-immigrant elements are rising in Greece. When people are poor, mistreated and terrified, they'll run with whoever promises to get rid of the oppression or make people safer.

If drug paramilitaries (or whatever force with sufficient expendable manpower and technology) decided to invade our shores or borders, and our military was split or disabled, you can bet a lot of people would be standing behind the fundie Tea Party freaks with the most ammo.

People always go with what they think will make them secure, if they're scared enough.

        Bqwatever.

Our invasion of Iraq was many horrible things, but it was NOT a fundamentalist religious crusade.

The rest of the examples are ancient, and that's part of the problem. Islam only compares with ancient religions, when patriarchal misogyny to that degree was more commonplace.

        •  You missed the point ENTIRELY. (0+ / 0-)

Yes, fundamentalist religious abuses abound in our military. Of course they freaking do.

But the point is that religious wackjobs are in all of the desert religions. What brings them to POWER is invading, occupying, abusing and interfering with their regular people.

It was only when we overthrew the duly elected government of Iran and installed a monster called the Shaw did the Ayatollas rise to power. It was US who armed the crazy-ass mujahedeen in Afghanistan to push back against the Soviets, which paved the way for the rule of the Taliban.

Whenever you abuse a people, they stand behind their strongest fighters, even if those fighters are insane. Empire strengthens extremism. Has always been.

..if Christian religious abuse (especially sexual abuse by whites against Native Americans in Catholic schools) and physical and cultural genocide are "ancient history."

          Jesus freaking Christ.
