  •  Glad you've pre-empted this argument: (17+ / 0-)
Thanks, Florida! Gun in the purse, round chambered. Put the purse down on the floor, and BLAM! Hit her friend right in the leg. Don't worry, though, because... look over there! It's a woman with a swimming pool in her purse!
Or maybe she had a fist in her purse, or a trampoline, or something . . .

    •  There's a case for design safety rules (2+ / 0-)

Manufacturers are, as I understand, exempt from product safety rules. Plenty of them design weapons that don't go off when you drop them, but there's no way to force the rest to make safer guns.

Admittedly the idea of making deadly weapons safe is a bit of a mind bender, and someone who hated guns could pervert the regulations into a TRAP situation.

      •  Well we could come up with all kinds (8+ / 0-)

of sensible precautions, that a lot of gun owners do know. It's the ones who think they are not going to have a problem. Just like that quick phone call or text behind the wheel.

        1) No alcohol in the last 6 hours. Much longer if you passed out from however much you drank. Or cold medicines, or pain killers, etc.

        2) No cleaning or handling a gun from dinner time to after breakfast.

        3) If the gun goes off, immediately figure out where the bullet(s) went, if you don't already know.

        4) Think of show and tell for guns as another form of Russian Roulette.

        5) Don't forget gravity and curiosity are always on.

That's the short list. My brain is going to sleep...
