  •  Ah yes the inert gun. Oopsie, that was ert after (9+ / 0-)

On Fort Riley the troops were getting ready to go to the sandbox where they carried at all times. They were being trained to carry at all times.  Before they entered the PX they had to fire their 'unloaded' guns into the barrel of sandbags, to prove they were 'unloaded'.

We're talking the best of the best here, not some belly up to the bar, rightful gun toter.

    Unregulated bearers just say oopsie.

    •  The best of the best are also property of the (0+ / 0-)

U.S. government and are therefore subject to all the rules and regulations of their owners. Are you of the opinion that citizens should be treated like the are in the military, like property?

Of course the military trains its personnel to engage in war, a very risky activity, it therefore has numerous and varied systems of controls, both prevention controls and mitigation controls to reduce the risk they expose their people to. These controls are implemented via regimented repetition and strict enforcement of regulation. I can see the benefit of clearing barrels when you are dealing with hundreds of armed personnel all in the same place at the same time mixing with civilian children, spouses and employees.

Another important detail regarding the military personnel and how they are trained with firearms is that they don't own their firearms, they are issued them. And the military is very particular about how their weapons are carried and used, hence there are very specific rules for how, when and where they can be carried and used.

Since civilians aren't property of the government and they own their firearms there isn't the same level of prescriptive and restrictive regulations to control our behavior. I can only speak for myself, but having been property and not being property any more I am not interested in legislation that treats me as such.

      •  I am saying the military is not a beginner in this (8+ / 0-)

gun stuff. You can't fill a diary every week full of friendly fire casualties from the military owned guns. Friendly fire happens every week and is fully documented in the gunFAIL.

A gun is always a gun. A war gun and a civilian gun is a deadly weapon regardless of the intention.

As is sadly shown in GunFAIL diary after GunFAIL diary, civilian gun ownership is a free-for-all, belly up to the bar, anything goes, good ship lollypop.

I don't care about you in particular and your authority problem. I do care about the sloppy treatment of guns by many upon many people. They need to have their sloppiness curbed before they hurt more people.

You may have a right to bear a gun, I don't think that means in any old sloppy way you care to, (see GunFAIL for example after example, week after week.)

      •  Wow, no rules for the safe and orderly functioning (6+ / 0-)

of society? Or only no gun rules?

There can be no protection locally if we're content to ignore the fact that there are no controls globally.
