  •  Iain Banks is the best--so sorry he is ill. (4+ / 0-)

Almost anything he has written as SF is really good, although I found his non-SF hard to take.  The first I read was Look to Windward.  I agree  Player of Games is really an amazing book that sneaks up on you.  Consider Phlebas is a remarkable first SF book.  Excision, with almost all the characters as ships run by AI is also amazing, since he manages to give several distinct personalities.  I loved Matter and, Surface Detail, and that one that you don't realize is a Culture novel until half way through and everything else.  Use of Weapons was hard but worth it.  No one does moral dilemmas and big issues like Iain Banks, and I will miss him if the report is correct.

I have been reading scifi for 40 years and found his books to be the best written today. He writes non scifi under the name Iain M. Banks I think.

I have read his book, Excession, over 20 times, something remarkable about that book. Don't leave out The Algebraist, where there are creatures that live in gas giants that live for billions of years.

You can find an article online where he describes the cancer he has and states he has only 6 months to live. He says the book he is working on now will be his last. So the report is correct and he will be sorely missed. Such a great mind.
