    serialized in Analog. That was what - 45 years ago? There have been a few at least equally good books in the time since, though.

    At least half the future I've been expecting hasn't gotten here yet. Sigh.... (Yes, there's gender bias in my name; no, I wasn't thinking about it when I signed up. My apologies.)

      and still nothing compares.  The core series one-upped War and Peace.

        (not having read it, you understand), that's a pretty low bar. ;)

        Still, for building solid universes with great stories - Kagan's Hellspark; Bujold's Sharing Knife series; Paksennarion; Anderson's Operation Chaos/Operation Luna -

        For me, it's how brightly my imagination burns when I'm inside the story.

        •  War and Peace is brilliant and insightful. (0+ / 0-)

          But as all non-science fiction tends to, it lacks the the sense of yearning and curiosity, so it's just a bunch of people doing banal things.  Still, I say the Dune series is greater because as an epic tale, it is.

          Today's trivia becomes tomorrow's sacrament.
