As a West Michigan hobbyist fruit grower, I’m breathing a lot easier now than I was last night. I’m in Allendale (the part of the township where I live was once called Pearline, continuing the fruit-placename theme), I have around 300 apple trees, 16 pears, 9 peach, scads of blackberries, red and black raspberries, dewberries, blueberries and strawberries galore – all on a 5 acre patch of land.

With the mature fruit trees in the midst of bloom, and a freeze warning, all you can do is hope things won’t be as bad as last year. For a while the low was forecast to be 24°. 25° is about as low as you can go and still expect fruit (albeit with at a 90% loss). As the night wore on, we dropped to 30°, and mercifully, no wind, then kind of hovered there until the sun came up.

After a survey this morning, everything looks good. There was minimal damage to apples and pears (maybe 10% loss), and no damage to peaches, which were at petal fall. Strawberries, also in bloom, look okay, too (jury's still out, as there were lots of buds yet to open).

The asparagus that was up got hit, but the roots should be fine. And the favas, which love cool weather, actually seem to have grown a few inches.

And tomorrow its supposed to be in the 80’s.

      I was worried all evening.
I missed MI apples so much last year, speaking selfishly. The harm to the trees and to the farmers was much more significant than that.

Some DKos series & groups worth your while: Black Kos, Native American Netroots, KosAbility, Monday Night Cancer Club. If you'd like to join the Motor City Kossacks, send me a Kosmail.

Not a farmer but that doesn't sound good to me.
BTW I noticed it is called "Cherry Capital Airport".  I take it that is indicative of the local agriculture.
