It can be tough to hear stuff like that, but if that person only hears one side of the argument what hope do they ever have of changing? To be the agent of change, you have to be willing to engage people with repugnant views. And it's not accomplished by yelling at them or getting in a big fight. In fact that's pretty ineffective. You have an effect - and it may not be a big one - by coming along side them. Find something you both agree on. Engage them in that. Then, as they bond with you, you will have a chance to influence them.

I once worked with a strong Bush supporter. This guy was an ex-marine. Did I start yelling at him about how the Bush admin was satan in a suit? No. I told him that I thought that veterans were treated very badly - which they often are - and that I thought this was a very important issue. Then I asked him what he thought. That started a conversation that allowed us to talk about how the Bush admin was very happy to send young men off to war but not so keen on helping them when they came home. OK, the guy probably didn't vote for Obama, but it made a little more willing to see the other side.

For if there is a sin against life, it consists perhaps not so much in despairing of life as in hoping for another life and in eluding the implacable grandeur of this life. - Albert Camus
