  •  It depends on the job and how closely you work (0+ / 0-)

with someone on the job.  There are many factors involved. In a workplace where you have to work as a team or as a duo or trio to accomplish the job task, then sometimes we have to show some restraint to have a productive work relationship.

So much depends on the type of job and also what the supervisor wants in term of cooperation and some jobs is necessary to just be professionals and steer clear of heated topics in order not to harm the working relationship. As I have seen workplaces where the tension affects the job performance and where you can cut the tension and anger with a dull knife. That is not good most of the time.

    •  Works both ways (0+ / 0-)

If this individual incessantly blathers on, your own focus and work performance may be effected, and quite frankly - how "effective" can someone be -who indulges in tabloid sensationalism to the point where the conversation enters the workplace.

These types are usually the source of tension.

At the very least, make it known that you will not be a sounding board, but without the insults.

I tend to encounter "Rapturists" who must constantly remind me the "End is Near", and itemize each and every news event to "prove their point" - I tell them that when the "End" does come, no one will be here to feel sorry or gloat about it - so why talk and worry about it?

Conservatism is an obsession with the past ... with little regard for the future.
